Apply to be a part of RSL in PUBPOL 301 and PUBPOL 302
The Hart Leadership Program will be offering two Research-Service Learning (RSL) gateway courses in the spring of 2017: Professor Deondra Rose’s Political Analysis for Public Policy (PUBPOL 301) and Professor Gunther Peck’s Policy Choice as Value Conflict (PUBPOL 302). These courses, which are core courses within the Public Policy major, partner with 1-3 local organizations to offer students the opportunity to work on ten-week group service projects related to course themes.
Students in Professor Rose’s and Professor Peck’s courses will have the option to apply to be a part of RSL. The RSL experience allows students to take the lessons they are learning in the classroom and apply them to a real life policy context. However, unlike in other service-learning courses, students will also have the opportunity to produce new knowledge, working collaboratively with their community partner to design a research project that addresses one of the organization’s essential questions or needs.
The RSL projects in Professor Rose’s course will center on how people experience and interact with public policies, whereas Professor Peck’s RSL projects will focus on social and distributive justice. Students will be partnering with Democracy NC, the Durham Literacy Center, Meals on Wheels Durham, and the Durham Nativity School.
Applications to participate in the RSL gateway option are available on the course Sakai site. They are due to Sarah Du on Thursday, January 19th.
