1:45-2:45PM

Durham City Council Member and Mayor Pro Tempore Jillian Johnson (PPS’03) will be talking to students about the importance of engaged citizenship to sustain and strengthen democracy, specifically in the context of Durham. Using examples of her own work and experience as a community organizer and as a city council member, she will discuss innovations such as the city’s Participatory Budgeting (PB) initiative, advancing economic, social and racial justice, and why it is important for young people to be active members of the communities that they are a part of, so that our communities and our democracy can thrive.
