Engaged Citizenship in Durham: A Conversation with Durham City Council Member and Mayor Pro Tempore, Jillian Johnson
12-1PM, Rhodes Conference Room
Durham City Council Member and Mayor Pro Tempore Jillian Johnson (PPS’03) will be talking to students about the importance of engaged citizenship to sustain and strengthen democracy, specifically in the context of Durham. Using examples of her own work and experience as a community organizer and as a city council member, she will discuss civic innovations such as Durham’s Participatory Budgeting (PB) initiative; advancing economic, social and racial justice; and why it is important for young people to be active members of their communities, so that our democracy can thrive. This event is sponsored by the Hart Leadership Program and Mi Gente, Duke’s undergraduate Latinx student association.
