Organizing Beyond Elections: A Conversation With Journalist Vann Newkirk II
6-8PM, Sanford Building 04
Join The Atlantic’s Vann Newkirk II and the Hart Leadership Program for a conversation with local and campus scholars, elected officials, and activists about how organizing continues after elections are over. Newkirk will interview panelists whose expertise and background covers activism around sexual violence and gender equity, healthcare, and criminal justice reform. They will seek to address how organizing around these issues is occurring in North Carolina in 2019. After Newkirk’s interview, the audience and other community members will continue the conversation in small groups to discuss ongoing efforts for, and sustained organizing around, the issues of criminal justice reform, access to healthcare, and prevention of sexual violence.
Newkirk is a staff writer at The Atlantic, where he covers politics and policy. In his work, Vann has covered health policy, civil rights, environmental justice, and the role of race and class in American history, and the evolution of black identity. Prior to becoming a journalist, he was a health policy analyst focusing on under-resourced communities.
