Edwin Coleman, a 2011 Hart Fellow, recently returned from his ten month fellowship in Khayelitsha, a township in Cape Town, South Africa.

Edwin worked with the Extra Mural Education Project, a not-for-profit development organization that seeks to help educators overcome obstacles such as over-crowding and lack of resources by developing schools into ‘community hubs’ through extra-mural activities.

Looking to answer questions about the quality of Khayelitsha’s education system, Edwin interviewed and collected stories from 14 recent high school graduates.  In addition to conducting his community-based research project, Edwin recorded his experiences through photographs and videos.
