HLP Director Gunther Peck is featured in an article in the 9th Street Journal about student participation in Durham’s 2019 municipal elections.

This year, Durham residents elected a mayor, members of the city council, and decided whether to support an Affordable Housing bond. Peck advocated for Duke to provide free Lyft rides for students to go vote. All day, cars shuttled students to their polling place at the Patterson Community Center.

Peck, along with his friend U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes of Maryland, stopped by the polling place to check on student turnout. When polls closed at 7:30 p.m., approximately 230 people had cast a ballot at the precinct. Many of them were Duke students, noted the precinct’s chief judge.
