Hart Leadership Visiting Lecturer, Gergen, receives DukeEngage Award.

Hart Leadership Program’s Visiting Lecturer, Christopher Gergen, was recently chosen as the recipient of the DukeEngage Excellence in Mentoring Award for 2011.This award is presented to a faculty or staff mentor who has demonstrated exceptional mentorship to DukeEngage Independent project participants, and exceptional leadership and vision in promoting engagement within higher education.

An excerpt from the nomination letter:
“My Faculty Mentor, Christopher Gergen, had a great positive impact on my Duke Engage experience this past summer at my sites in Charlottesville, VA, and Durham. In his class, “Leading as a Social Entrepreneur,” I learned many real-world skills, including how to successfully organize and implement a plan to create social impact. Many of these lessons were crucial in my ability to have success in my Duke Engage project. Christopher allowed me to formulate my own ideas independently, but was able to focus my energy if I strayed too far. His lessons of creating a social impact theory and then making this theory actionable through a business plan based on market research helped me to build a stronger, and hopefully more sustainable foundation over the summer. Christopher was also able to catalyze my experience in Durham by connecting me into resources in the Durham area that greatly enhanced my summer.”
