With the help of student leaders, the Hart Leadership Program hosted a panel on Monday evening moderated by the Atlantic’s Vann Newkirk (@fivefiths on Twitter). The event, “Organizing Beyond Elections,” featured local and campus scholars, elected officials, and activists about how organizing continues after elections are over. Newkirk interviewed panelists whose expertise and background covers activism around sexual violence and gender equity, healthcare, and criminal justice reform. The conversation centered on organizing around these issues is occurring in North Carolina in 2019.

Newkirk was joined by Satana Deberry, Durham County District Attorney and life-long criminal justice reform advocate, as well as Sanford’s own Professor Don Taylor and Mumbi Kanyogo (Trinity ’19). The event also featured breakout sessions on sexual violence and gender equity, healthcare, and criminal justice reform, each led by student organizers in their respective fields.
