The Hart Leadership Program hosted its first event of the semester Monday evening. Titled “Remembering White Supremacy,” it featured several members of the Durham City-County Committee on Confederate Monuments and Memorials. The committee’s co-chairs Robin Kirk, who is faculty co-chair of the Duke Human Rights Center, and Charmaine McKissick-Melton, an associate professor of mass communications at North Carolina Central University, described the complex and emotionally-charged nature of the issue. Deondra Rose, an assistant professor of public policy at the Sanford School, was also a member of the committee and reflected on her takeaways from the work.
Local leaders set up the commission in the wake of the 2017 toppling of Durham’s Confederate Monument. It was tasked with engaging in a community-driven process to make recommendations for what to do with the statue’s remains and other Confederate markers around Durham. The completed report, submitted to the City Council and County Commission earlier this year, is available here.
