Voter Mobilization in Theory and Practice

Abstract

*In 2016, the SOL program pivoted for the year to focus on political engagement in what was then called the “Political Engagement Pilot Project,” or PEPP. This was an alternative version of SOL that laid the groundwork for the development of the PEP program as it currently exists.

My interest in voting rights and mobilization was put into action this summer when I interned at You Can Vote, a grassroots coalition in Durham. You Can Vote is a non-partisan organization dedicated to informing citizens of their rights and helping them overcome perceived barriers to voting in North Carolina. I learned a lot about the Voter ID law, which at the time, made voting more difficult for certain demographics of people. Inspired by the tremendous passion my fellow You Can Vote team members and volunteers exhibited, I wanted to continue my involvement as their liaison to Duke University.
