Voter Registration and Information in Durham, NC and Rural Expansion Counties

Abstract

Introduction
I created three maps to help You Can Vote educate people about the voter ID law taking effect in 2020 and identify areas which could use extra education and outreach efforts. The first map shows the locations of Boards of Elections and DMVs in each county as compared to that county’s percentage of unregistered voters. This is intended to show where people may face more difficulty with the process of voting, since if fewer people are registered there is likely a reason that could also influence access to voter ID. My next two maps are intended to educate voters about the places they can access voter IDs. Boards of Elections provide free voter ID cards and DMVs issue non-operator licenses which can be used if a voter does not have another form of ID. In this report I discuss my methodology, conclusions, and potential future study.
