Fostering Children’s Growth and Well-Being: A Direct Care Counselor Internship

Abstract

Eleanor Mackey spent her summer as a Direct Care Counselor Intern in the therapeutic residential treatment program at Walker Therapeutic and Educational Programs. Comprising various programs, including a K-8 special education school, community counseling center, and therapeutic residential homes, Walker is dedicated to developing children’s capacity to thrive in less restrictive environments. The summer began with two full-time weeks of training which covered psychiatry information, first-aid, therapy tips, emotional self-regulation, and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training.

Engaging primarily with clients aged six to fourteen, Eleanor’s daily routine included facilitating structured activities, supporting clients during quiet periods, organizing recreational therapy, assisting with meals, and providing one-on-one support during bedtime routines. Eleanor reflected on the hands-on nature of her work, from teaching life skills to crisis intervention, and the valuable leadership and practical skills gained throughout the summer. Despite the intense workload, Eleanor experienced transformative learning and personal leadership growth and she envisions a future career in a similar setting.
