Strengthening Community Health through Interpersonal Relationships and Initiatives

Abstract

Joy’s transformative summer experience at Project Horseshoe Farm in Greensboro, AL emphasized the pivotal role of interpersonal relationships in fostering community health, particularly among vulnerable demographics. As part of the internship, Joy co-led the Community Centre Program three days a week, engaging in various activities like transportation, promoting healthy lifestyles, playing games, preparing meals, and distributing fresh produce. She made Health Partner visits and contributed to the Women’s Enhanced Independent Living housing program. Additionally, Joy played a role in creating Horseshoe Farm’s inaugural Summer Youth Program for elementary and middle school students, offering academic support, physical and intellectual activities, and weekly field trips. The program’s premise will extend into the fall with an after-school program for elementary students. Joy’s time in Greensboro illustrated how collective support and mutual understanding can foster a sense of belonging and empowerment within community and testifies to the power of community-driven initiatives in promoting holistic well-being and social cohesion.
