Course Description:

Co-taught by long time Durham residents, non-profit leaders and organizers, Lead the Way, Durham will explore how residents shape and are shaped by the local policy environment and the creativity they employ to address social/civic issues in Durham. This class be rooted in the exploration of the following questions: Who defines community? How does that inform our community participation? What are the core tenets of ethical community engagement? How do we implement them in our daily lives? How do geography, race, class, power, and privilege influence our conception of engagement? To learn from residents and leaders, this class will welcome local leaders in education, housing, government, criminal justice, and food security as practioners in residence throughout the semester. In addition to this, the class will spend 50% of its time off campus (transportation will be coordinated/funded). This class is for Duke students interested in exploring the relationship between Duke and Duke, deepening their relationship with Durham and imagining community-based leadership possibilities.
