The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all areas of life, raising many pressing social issues to the fore. Students in one HLP course course have designed infographics tackling to engage the public about these concerns.
The original goal of the assignment was for students to hone visual communication skills by creating a graphic that would persuade or inform an audience of a social issue or cause they cared about. However, the pandemic prompted many of students to modify their topics. The resulting graphics spread awareness about issues ranging from mental health resources for Duke students to sustainable spring cleaning.
The students—who are taking Associate Director Lalita Kaligotla’s PPS263 Border Crossing course—hope the graphics can spread awareness about these important topics.
Border Crossing is the gateway course for HLP’s Service Opportunities in Leadership Program. Students in the program take an introductory course during the Spring, where they develop immersive summer projects funded by HLP. During the Fall semester, they take a capstone course to reflect on their experience and continue their work.
