Knowledge and Adaptive Capacity

Abstract

Research Questions:

  1. What and how much do climate experts in Bangladesh, as well as educated laypeople in Bangladesh and India, know about climate change?
  2. How does the amount of knowledge a respondent possesses, and/or the way they generate that knowledge, influence their self-reported ability to respond to or prepare for the effects of climate change?

Hypothesis:

The possession of climate change knowledge increases an individual’s adaptive capacity by increasing his/her ability to:

  1.  identify the causes of climate-related problems as well as potential solutions to those problems,
  2. better predict likely future changes to the environment in their location, and
  3. either respond on their own in ways that serve their interests or more effectively communicate their vulnerabilities and needs to those with conventionally greater decision-making authority.
